Images of Peace and Harmony

Last year I met an artist, Christina Heiniger whose paintings caught my eye some of them connected to ROW 12 Tolerance theme. I reconnected with her this year and she gave permission to share these jpg images with you. I have shared them with my students and asked them to talk about what they see and how they illustrate peace. One of the pictures, The Harmony Friends was inspired by imagery from Tibetan Buddhism. Here is a link to one version of the story that could be shared with students. One activity that i will try will my students is to look for stories from different cultures that pertain to the theme of taking care other each other and showing respect, love and a willingness to get along. Christina gave permission for us to use these images as long as we give credit to her and link to her site.

Put together (digitally!) to create class book of Peace.

My 5th graders started reading War With Grandpa by Robert Kimmel Smith.

If you have not read this book it is about a young boy who's Grandpa comes from Florida to live with his family and this young man has to give up his room. Which he is not at all happy about hence the name War with Grandpa. Anyway, we have been trying to apply some Critical Literacy Skills into different things we are working on. Honestly, I am new to the whole concept, but love the conversations and reflections it brings about. Anyway, we discussed many principles in the book and how they relate to the topic of peace. For some reason, this group of students has few members whom have some working understanding about World War II. So there were discussions on territories, selfishness, the thirst of power and how those things get in the way of the peace concept (both in the book, Pearl Harbor, Hitler). I was surprisedabout how much they knew about the subject. Truly, I am looking forward to participating in our next discussion on this book.

If another group would like to read this wonderful book that would be awesome. Maybe we can even get together and chat about he book. Just a thought.

Peacemakers

Carolyn Howes, New Garden Friends School, Greensboro, NC, USA

We had a Peace week a couple of years ago.  We focused on 4 peacemakers:  Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Theresa, Greg Mortenson, and Wangari Maathai.  Each teacher in our 4 person team lead a lesson on one of the people.  Every afternoon for 4 days the students went to one of the 4 groups.  By Friday they had learned about all 4 peacemakers and we did some reflection activities.  (Which peacemaker do you look up to the most?  etc.)  We found that focusing on role models helped make the concept of peace more concrete for the students.

There is a great children's book by Greg Morstenson about his experience entitled  Listen to the Wind the Story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea big hit with my little guys and also a young adult version entitled Three Cups of Tea

What Does Peace Feel Like?

Carolyn Howes, New Garden Friends School, Greensboro, NC, USA

We read What Does Peace Feel Like?.

Then students created their own pages for a class book.

I am thinking this would be a great way to create a public service announcement (on iMovie) that could be sent out to all the teachers in our building....they could show it to their classes as a way to promote peace within our building!
